Oeuvre of Sathyendran

Oeuvre of Sathyendran

Sathyendran is impossibly idealistic. A Pure painter. Free flowing, unbridled genius, tempered only by his own mental strictures. One who creates, coasts, discards and creates again. There is an innocence to his work which is often playful, sometimes sad but always uniquely Sathyendran.

There are artists who paint on canvas or with water colours all their lives. There are painters who adhere to a medium and even style and take these to levels of genius not known before or after. You see one of their paintings and you can say this is a Monet or this is a Matisse. Sathyendran on the other hand has never limited himself to any medium or style, preferring to paint as fancy takes him, forever exploring ways of giving shape to his ideas and dreams and thoughts. One can never pigeonhole him to a specific mould and say this is Sathyendran, often to the delighted frustration of art critics who wonder “Where in all these works is Sathyendran?”

That said, there are certain styles, his squiggles and looped line paintings for example, which are uniquely his own. But then again, he is not just squiggles and looped line paintings. Perhaps, if he had stayed faithful to any one style, he would have achieved much greater acclaim. But then again, that would not be him – an artist who creates for pure pleasure, who paints for the sheer joy of painting with nary a thought for what comes before or after.

A lot of his paintings feature birds and free nature – perhaps a yearning for the freedom that is so denied to humans? One cannot tell.

All said and done, what better way to understand his works than to go through the critiques by renowned art critics which appeared in newspapers from time to time, on his exhibitions. The viewer may like to go through those, which are given under “Critiques”, for a proper and all-round understanding of the Artist and his Art.

We hope that owners of homes and of various establishments such as hotels, shops and offices, apart from Art Collectors, will find these works interesting enough to decorate their walls and enhance their ambience.

As Thoreau said, “It is not what you look at that matters, it is what you see”. We guarantee that the longer you look at each of these works, the more and more you will see!
